IDAHOBIT: International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia 2018.
On the 19th of May 2018 Moving Forward was invited to be a part of the annual; IDAHOBIT event in Bradford.
During the event Moving Forward facilitators were invited to host a stall and promote the organisation and the various groups that are run by Moving Forward.
The event was also a great chance to connect with various other organisations and individuals within the greater Bradford area.
The event opened with a speech delivered by Councillor Richard Dunbar, the Bradford Districts first LGBT+ Champion.
Councillor Dunbar spoke about the efforts the council is making to be more inclusive and the success’ of the organisation within Bradford to make the district a move welcoming and inclusive area.
Following Councillor Dunbar’s speech, Moving Forward member Shingai, gave a moving speech recounting her own trials and triumphs as an asylum seeker and the importance of reaching out to all people with love, compassion and respect. This speech was well received by everyone in attendance, and it was a great opportunity to hear a first hand account of the good work that is being done in the name of solidarity and alliance.
After the speeches were over; Moving Forward Facilitators hosted our stall and connected with other organisations that were present. Some of the organisations that Moving Forward had a chance to connect with were;
- Trans-Misson an organisation dedicated to supporting Trans men and women,
- Karma Nirvana, which is a nationally recognised organisation that provides support to victims of Honour-based abuse and Forced Marriages.
Both of these organisations provide fantastic services and do great work with many individuals. It is was a privilege to meet with them.
Our own stall was a big success, we got the chance to meet many people and promote Moving Forward and the groups that we facilitate, many visitors to the stall showed an interest in the services we provide and were keen to hear about the work done by Moving Forward in he past.
The event was a great day and it was fantastic to see everyone coming together, there is still work to be done when it comes to raising awareness of issues faced by everyone, but events like this show the passion and dedication felt by all when it comes to making society fairer for all. Hopefully we will see everyone again next year.
