Moving Forward – My first six months are up soon.

Moving Forward was formed as a Men’s Mental Health Support Group five years ago by Alan Wilson of Keighley, West Yorkshire. Moving Forward is highly regarded by local mental health practitioners -descriptions such as “gold standard”, “priceless”, “vital” are often used. Member’s use phrases such as “I’d be dead if it wasn’t for you”, “It’s my only family”.

I joined the group in 2014 whilst off work due to severe anxiety & depression. I was invited to join the management committee which I did.

In the summer of 2017 I retired from full time work and concentrated my efforts on project managing Moving Forward’s expansion. My first six months as project manager will end in February. It’s been a busy time and the team work is excellent. There is nothing better than giving service to your community.

What a contrast to corporate employment! No unrealistic targets, and deliberately induced stress – just open and honest good will for team success.

February 2018 is an important month for Moving Forward Group as we increase the number of groups and extend our services from men only to all over 18 years old.

Free Support

The group’s free community based approach with education & peer support is lifting people out of depression.

Moving Forward provides a pathway from poor mental health to supported wellbeing. Members are trained in the causes and effects of poor mental health, how to identify and cope with triggers, and much more. Members can progress their wellbeing by becoming knowledgable group Facilitators and play a part in better mental health for their community.

Bradford District

There are also Moving Forward groups in Bradford, Bingley and Keighley. Currently Moving Forward does not receive any funding for its services and is truly voluntary.

Earlier this year, in a joint project, with Keighley Job Centre, Moving Forward began wellbeing appointments with claimants. Both men and women attended the services provided at the Job Centre which included a twelve week course on mental health.

The group has identified a broader need for it’s services, and much more will be available from February 2018.

Mind in Bradford has been a generous host to our Bradford Men’s Group in recent years. As part of Moving Forward’s expansion we are creating more Bradford based groups and these will be based at the Bradford Deaf Centre, 25 Hallfield Road, Bradford, BD1 3RP. This involves the Men’s Group moving from Mind’s premises starting on the 3rd January.

In Keighley, Rev Jonathan Pritchard’s All Saint’s Church has generously supported Moving Forward for some time. This support has been vital, and we are very grateful.

We have decided on a common sense strategy of delivering a full day of services at each venue, starting with Keighley and Manningham, Bradford. This involves three two hour group meetings; women’s, Mixed, and Men’s. In addition there will be concurrent one to one appointments available for those not ready for group work.

From February 2018 the NHS “Champions Show the Way” project will be kindly contributing towards part of our venue costs. They will also provide training opportunities.

The new Bradford groups will be named Moving Forward Manningham instead of the current Moving Forward Bradford. This is because further groups are intended for other parts of Bradford.
